Name China

「China」在 1555 年 Richard Eden 翻譯葡萄牙探險家 Duarte Barbosa 1516 年的日記，開始出現在英文，當時「中國」自己並不使用。

• 起源可透過葡萄牙語 (Portuguese)、馬來語 (Malay)、和波斯語 (Persian) 的 Chīn (چین) 追溯到古印度使用的梵文 (Sanskrit) Cīna (चीन)。Cīna 最早用於早期印度教聖經 (Hindu scripture)，包括 Mahābhārata (公元前 5 世紀) 和 the Laws of Manu (公元前 2 世紀)。依據牛津英文字典，梵文來源是有爭議的。
• 1655 年，Martino Martini 認為源自「秦朝」(公元前 221–206)。
• 其它來源有 the names for Yelang and the Jing or Chu state.
